Gareth Emery - 7 Hour Set @ Sankeys, Manchester - March 18th 2011

Gareth Emery will be playing his first ever 7 Hour Set at Sankeys in Manchester, UK on March 18th 2011.

After a nine-month absence, Gareth Emery makes a much-demanded return to Sankeys with something very special: his longest ever set at 7 hours.

After a series of recent extended sets like the four-hour extravaganza in Leeds for The Northern Lights Concert, for the first time ever he’ll be on the decks from start to finish.

Chatting about the night, Gareth said “It was something I’ve wanted to do for ages and Manchester is the best possible place to do it. I’ve always been equally cool opening and closing a night and have done both at Sankeys, so why not do both? Not only is it a chance to play deeper at the start and more slamming later on that I normally would, it also means I can bring out some amazing older material and lesser-known gems that I don’t get to fit into a normal set. It’s fair to say I’ll be spending a lot of the next few months buried in iTunes thinking about the set for that night”.

Expect the usual Garuda production out in force with additional lasers, VJs and more making the level to detail that bit higher than a normal night at Sankeys.

As we know times are tight after the festive period, the first 200 tickets are available now for just £10 + BF. Don’t delay as these will sell out quickly.

The Sound Of Garuda II (2)

The next installment of the "The Sound Of Garuda II" 2, mix album by Gareth Emery is due out in 2011. Very little info has been said about this album. All we know is that it will be coming out after the Northern Lights Remix Album, which should be coming out around the end of March 2011.

I'm really looking forward to this one, even more so than the first. The Garuda Music label has been top notch with their producers and releases. I hope to hear a whole bunch of new tracks on this one!

Update: The Sound of Garuda: Chapter 2 – Mixed By Gareth Emery is out on September 5th.

To borrow from football parlance, 2010 has been a year of two halves for Gareth Emery. Crucially, it was the year that he finally pulled his finger out, knuckled down and got cracking on his very first artist album, 'Northern Lights', after producing tracks and remixes for some of the leading imprints in trance for the past eight or so years. About time, you might say. But the reason it's been such a long time in the inception is, oddly, testament to both his dedication and rapid rise to prominence.

"I first said that I was going to finish it in the next year during my first interview with DJmag," he says. "And that was back in 2006. Every year since then, I've said the same and never managed to do it. But somehow this year, in spite of having the busiest year or two I've ever had, I managed to do it in the first six months. From January to July, I finished it. I got so fed up with trying to do it and failing."

Emery's idea of failing is clearly at odds with that of many artists. Because trance moves so quickly - both in terms of beats-per-minute and sonic development - he feels that music can date rapidly, something he is acutely aware of and desperately keen to avoid. And it's his desire to keep this all-important debut super fresh that he decided to get it done, once and for all, and as quickly as possible. No mean feat considering he also found the time to tour (much of the album was written on the road), as well as maintaining his fledgling Garuda label and its corresponding club night at Sankey's in Manchester.

"For the first half of the year, I didn't have much of a life. Anything I could do on the road I did, and the rest was spent in the studio. Doing an artist album is always going to be one of the most difficult things to do. Before, I'd have four or five tracks and be working on them for five months. Then all of a sudden the tracks from the beginning of the project start to sound less current. I'd end up releasing them, but realised that if I was going to do it, I was going to have to work massively hard and make it in a short, intense period of time.

"There's always this pressure to constantly be doing stuff, to constantly have music out there. The reason you do that is you want to keep your gig diary busy. This was the first time I had the freedom to do it. And I'm so glad I did."

None of the vocalists he's used on the album had ever done dance music before. Emery even recruited his sister Roxanne, a folk singer with her own burgeoning career in the music business, as well as sometime model and singer Lucy Saunders. His plans post the album are hardly pedestrian either. He wants to take it properly live, on the road and see how it pans out. By the time you read this, he'll have done his first show at the O2 Academy in Leeds. The classically trained pianist will be picking up a synth (and possibly the guitar too) bringing all the vocalists in to sing their tracks live, as well as co-ordinating live strings and live drums. It's ambitious, but nothing he can't handle.

"It's a complete shot in the dark. If it's a success, we may take it on the road," he says. A Northern Lights remix album will follow in time for Miami next year, and also another mix, 'The Sound of Garuda II', bringing together tracks from the label. No rest for the wicked, then.

Initially inspired by an article written by journalist Paul Harris on Detroit's urban renewal city farms in the Guardian newspaper, the video for Above & Beyond and Gareth Emery pres. OceanLab 'On A Good Day (Metropolis)' captures the song's essential meaning of triumph over adversity through the powerful, visual narrative of the Georgia Street Community Collective and their determination to make a better, brighter life for their local community.


Since the collapse of a once thriving automotive industry, Detroit has become known as a monument of urban decay with disused warehouses, derelict wasteland and vacant factories peppering the city. Georgia Street Community Collective are one of many organisations harnessing local action and bringing community volunteers together to create positive results -- regenerating wasteland as urban farms and community gardens.

Mixmag asks Gareth Emery, "Who do you think is the Greatest DJ?" Here is what he says.



"In 2002, I sent Paul van Dyk a CD of my first track, unmastered. Next thing, someone rang up and said van Dyk played it live on radio at Nature One, a big festival in Germany. That track was 'Mistral'. It's easy, when you get where Paul van Dyk is, to rely on tried and tested names, to play it safe – so anyone who plays an unlabelled CD from someone they've never even heard of… well, it's a lot rarer than you might think. He's not a massive one for crowd interaction, but he's never needed to be because he's so good at what he does: three-hour sets and never a moment when the energy is lost. I saw him a few times at Gatecrasher in '98–'99 and he was undisputed king of that scene, before guys like Tiësto and Armin van Buuren, when the whole trance thing exploded. Paul van Dyk's was a name I knew before I was even old enough to go clubbing. When I did, he lived up to my expectations – and then some."

Following the epic sold out Podcast 100 event at the world’s no.1 club Sankeys, Gareth Emery and Garuda join forces with Digital Society for an arena show to mark the launch of his debut artist album ‘Northern Lights’ at the stunning O2 Academy in Leeds.
In the first performance of its kind by a UK trance artist, GE will be celebrating the release of Northern Lights (23rd Sep) by kicking off his worldwide album tour in Leeds with a one-off concert style event, featuring a four hour DJ and live set, with vocal performances and instrumental interludes seamlessly integrated into Gareth’s longest ever performance in Europe.

Accompanying this will be a custom-designed arena show, with a wealth of exclusive features including next generation LEDs, CO2 cannons, dancers and of course stunning sound, as you’d expect from an event hosted by Garuda and Digital Society. Plus we’ll be making sure the entire show is professionally filmed so you can remember it later (for free).
Also performing in the arena will be two very special guests. Already a huge favourite with the Digital Society crowd, Sean Tyas makes his debut on a Garuda event at the perfect time given that he’s just delivered a stunning remix for ‘Sanctuary’, the debut single from Northern Lights, which has been a YouTube sensation, clocking up 200,000 views in the first two days alone. In addition, taking the earlier slot will a trance and progressive legend in Orkidea – one of Gareth Emery’s favourite DJs - who’ll be setting the scene like only he knows how.

With Garuda responsible for numerous sell outs of Sankeys and Digital Society the new standard bearer of the trance sound in the UK, you can be sure that when these two modern era super brands combine with Gareth Emery in the form of his life you’ve got something very special indeed.
